Building Business as a Team: Meet John Yee, Director of Logistics and Facilities

Joined: July 2002

John Yee remembers exactly why he wanted to join General Tools: He was impressed with the company’s product line and client list.

John is proud to have helped build an expert team to execute the company’s transformation from manufacturer to major importer, along with his instrumental role in setting up GT’s logistics department and relocating corporate headquarters.

“You're only as good as your team, so I brought in people knowledgeable about customs brokerage, freight forwarding and pricing,” he explains. John has learned much from past mentors Jeff Arbeit and Chris Edwards and his current mentor, Shernette Matthews. He says he’s learned something from every GT person he’s worked with.

“They come from different backgrounds, but all have made me a better, wiser person,” he says.

Two of John’s most-used GT products include his utility knife – for which GT owns the patent – and the 4-in-1 car escape tool he keeps in his vehicle.

Other bonuses John received after hiring on at GT include fond memories of company picnics, softball games and holiday parties, and his 20-year friendship with colleague Nigel Smith.

“I’m happy I got to see the company 80th, 90th and now 100th year anniversary milestones,” he adds.

John’s favorite fun fact about General Tools:

The former property at 80 White Street/79 Walker Street was featured in TV series Law & Order, Blue Bloods and Boardwalk Empire, and the movie Annie.
