Automotive Lab Scopes

Every professional and do-it-yourselfer auto mechanic can benefit from owning a General Tools PalmScope. Today, both trucks and cars are becoming increasingly complex in terms of their design. The increased complexity in engine structure, wiring, and computerized elements is also increasing the challenges the modern day mechanic faces when having to complete repairs and basic inspections. The PalmScope, a full-featured borescope of unrivalled quality, is a must-have tool to add to the auto mechanic’s arsenal - It will serve as a tool used repeatedly for everything from routine maintenance to visual inspections during bigger jobs involving engine and transmission work.

How Auto Mechanics Can Use the PalmScope

The PalmScope’s many uses are what make it an exceptional tool for the auto mechanic. If you’re a professional auto mechanic or even if you just like to tinker around with engines in your spare time, the PalmScope is a must have addition to the toolbox. If you are thinking about getting a gift for the mechanic in your life, the PalmScope is a tool that will prove well used, well liked, and appreciated. The flexible borescope is useful for all of the following and more:

  • Checking for blocked oil passages
  • Checking for blocked water passages in the engine block
  • Checking the integrity of the fuel tank
  • Checking castings and welds
  • Checking interior rocker panels for rust
  • Checking the integrity of seals
  • Identifying the location of dropped objects/tools
  • Performing valve inspections
  • Viewing piston rings and pistons for leakage and wear
  • Performing visual inspections in the engine and under the vehicle

Flawless Design Saves the Mechanic Hours of Unnecessary Work

The PalmScope is perfect for the auto mechanic looking to circumvent the need to pull an engine apart for an inspection and to avoid other potentially backbreaking work. Its two-foot flexible probe features a 9mm diameter camera lens at the end. The sleek probe and camera slide right into tight spaces inside a motor so it can get to those hard to reach, impossible to see locations. The probe on the PalmScope is waterproof and the probe maintains its shape so it can be stored in the clamshell case more readily. The probe is also water, dust, and oil resistant up to an IP67 standard. The days where a mechanic has to put hours of work into dismantling an engine only to find that the problem lies elsewhere are over. With this powerful borescope, one can view tight, darken, difficult-to-get-to-areas on a large 2.7-inch LCD display at a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels.

PalmScopes are Both Durable and Portable

Let’s face it; a mechanic needs durable tools. A tool that is going to last is one that can handle a bit of rough handling: The PalmScope is drop proof for up to one meter. The unit will remain unscathed even after striking a two-inch thick piece of hardwood from drop from 39 inches. The clamshell case is capable of absorbing an impact and protecting the unit. Yet, for all its ruggedness, the device weighs a mere nine ounces, so it is non-bulky and highly portable. It’s slightly bigger than the average smartphone with measurements of 5.4 X 2.9 X 1.5 inches, so it is light enough to slip into a pocket or into the black nylon case that comes with the unit. The case features a convenient belt clip so the mechanic just slips it in its pouch and goes.

What’s Included

Four probes come with the unit. The 45-degree mirror allows for locating objects that are unseen and around corners. The magnetic and pickup hooks are useful for retrieving dropped objects inside the engine, and the thread protector does just that: It protects the threads on spark plug holes and exhaust manifolds while the mechanic is working on them. The PalmScope comes with a user manual and a black nylon case featuring a belt clip. To power the device, it requires four AAA batteries. The batteries are a separate purchase from the unit.

The PalmScope offers one hand operation, ease of handling, and the minimal controls lend to the unit’s smooth operation. Out of five buttons, one button allows you to change the brightness of the image, and another allows you to zoom in the image on the screen up to 4X the original size. Another button allows you to invert an image 180 degrees for ease of viewing, and the other button decreases brightness. In the center of the four yellow control buttons, a red on/off button powers the device. The ease of device operation alone makes the PalmScope appealing, but the unit’s full line of features make it a coveted device, and along with essential diagnostic capabilities, and advanced auto repair software, one no auto mechanic’s tool box should be without.
